Ventura · Ventura County

Eight miles inland is a different climate, and it needs a different answer

Crestway works on heating, cooling and ventilation across Ventura and the towns along the coast and up the valleys. A quote that has not asked where your house sits is a guess, because in this county the right system on the beach and the right system twenty minutes inland are not the same machine.

Where you live

Five parts of this county crossed with four decisions. What the marine layer, the salt, the inland heat and the wind each do to a system — and what changes in the answer depending on which of them you have.

01 Why we lead with it

This county is four climates in half an hour

The beach spends half the summer under a marine layer and rarely gets truly hot. A mile or two in, the fog burns off by eleven and the afternoons are real. Up the valley it is hot, dry and dusty. On a hillside you get wind that does things to an outdoor unit that nothing on the flat does.

Four different problems, four different right answers, and one postcode prefix.

02

Which means we say no a lot

The coastal package is wrong for most of this county. Protective coil coatings, shorter service intervals and corrosion-resistant hardware are genuinely worth it within a few streets of the water and are mostly wasted three miles inland. We will tell you which you are, and if it is the second one we will say so and charge you less.

What we do

Six things

01

Repair

No cooling and no heat, checked in order of cost, with the reading that proves the answer shown to you rather than described.

02

Annual service

Charge verified by superheat and subcooling, coil and drain cleaned, combustion tested on gas heat, and the readings written down.

03

Siting and sizing

Where the outdoor unit goes and how big it needs to be, decided from the address rather than from the floor area.

04

Corrosion assessment

An honest answer about what your particular street does to metal, and whether the protective options are worth their money at your house.

05

Ductless and retrofit

A lot of older Ventura houses have no ducts and no easy route for any. Ductless where that is true, ducted where it genuinely is not.

06

Premises

Shops, restaurants, offices and light industrial along Thompson and Main and out to the harbour. Planned maintenance twice a year with readings against each machine.

Homes

Houses

Older bungalows near downtown with no ductwork, post-war tract housing on the avenue, and newer houses up the hillsides. Three different jobs, and we will tell you which one you have before quoting it.

Business

Premises

Retail, restaurants, offices and light industrial. A written record per unit, planned maintenance twice a year, and a straight answer about what the coast is doing to equipment near the harbour.

Six things this website does not print

Equipment lifespansNo number. How long a system lasts here depends on how far you are from the water, how it was installed and how it has been maintained. Any figure would be wrong for most of the people reading it.
PricesAn older bungalow with no duct and a newer hillside house are different jobs entirely. A figure here would be a guess.
A response timeWe do not publish one. We will tell you where you are in the queue when you ring, and say if somebody else can get there sooner.
Savings percentagesIt depends on the house, the street and the summer. Anybody printing a number has chosen the flattering case.
Reviews and ratingsThere are none on this site. When there are real ones they will be somewhere you can check them.
Questions

Asked most often

Why does it matter which part of Ventura I live in?

Because four things change across this county and they do not change together: peak temperature, humidity, salt and dust. At the water the peaks are mild, the humidity is high and the salt is severe. A mile inland the afternoons are genuinely warm and the salt is moderate. Up the valley it is hot and dry and the problem is dust rather than salt. The same house plan wants a different size, a different siting and a different maintenance interval depending on where it stands.

Do I need the coastal protection package?

Within a few streets of the water, it is defensible. Three miles inland it is close to wasted money and we will tell you so rather than take it. What helps everywhere near the coast, and costs far less, is siting the outdoor unit on the landward side of the building where there is a choice, and rinsing the condenser coil with fresh water regularly as part of the visit.

Our house is cool but it feels damp. Is the system too small?

Almost certainly the opposite. On this coast the humidity is high and the peak temperatures are moderate, so a system that is too big satisfies the thermostat in a few minutes and stops — and dehumidification only happens while the machine is actually running. You end up with air that is cool and heavy. It is the commonest complaint we hear within sight of the water and the answer is usually a smaller system, not a larger one.

Our house has no ductwork. What are the options?

A great many older houses here were built with a wall or floor furnace and nothing else, and there is no sensible route for ducts without losing a cupboard in every room. In those houses a ductless system sized per room is the honest answer rather than a compromise, and it usually costs less than the ducted job that would have compromised the house. We will tell you which kind of house you have on the first visit, because it changes everything after it.

How long will a new system last here?

We will not give you a number, and we would be careful of anybody who does. It depends on how far you are from the water, which side of the building the unit sits on, how much dust the site gets, how it was installed and how it has been maintained. Any figure printed on a contractor’s website would be wrong for most of the people reading it.
